Violence in the ER

A new bipartisan bill strengthens protections against violence for emergency physicians and care teams, a longtime priority for ACEP. The Save Healthcare Workers Act (H.R. 3178) creates legal penalties for anyone who knowingly and intentionally assault a hospital employee.

ACEP-led Congressional briefings and advocacy, including the ACEP / Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) “No Silence on ED Violence” campaign, are making troubling stories from the frontlines impossible to ignore.

“The Save Healthcare Workers Act strengthens legal protections for emergency physicians, nurses, and other health care workers. This is a strong step toward ensuring that violence against frontline health care professionals will not be tolerated. ACEP applauds this bipartisan effort to protect health care workers so that we can focus on treating patients without fearing for our safety.”

Alison Haddock, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP

A 2024 ACEP poll found that more than nine in ten (91%) emergency physicians have been threatened or attacked in the past year. Nearly half (48%) said that legislation to strengthen workforce protections would make them feel safer on the job.

There’s no question that more must be done to make sure that you are safe on the job. ACEP is making sure that Congress hears your concerns and acts on them.
