WASHINGTON, D.C.—In response to the tragic train derailment in Washington State, the president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Paul Kivela, MD, FACEP, and president of its Washington Chapter, Patrick Solari, MD, FACEP, released the following statement:

"Our hearts go out to those affected by the train derailment that occurred in DuPont, WA, yesterday, especially those who were injured, and the families of those who died.

“When disasters occur, our communities in Washington State step up to the challenge and take care of those in need. We are very proud of our first responders, emergency physicians, nurses, and trauma teams, who work together to save lives during incredibly challenging circumstances. We encourage us all to work to support the victims of this terrible accident, and thank the brave men and women across our region who cared for them. It is times like this when those who spend their lives training to save others shine the brightest.

“This mass casualty incident once again serves as a unfortunate reminder that these events can happen anywhere, at a moment notice. Legitimate concern remains around the nation regarding disaster readiness. We must continue to devote consistent federal and state funding to ensure adequate and sustainable local and regional disaster preparedness.”
